On September 11, 2001, the United States of America was victim to a large-scale terrorist attack orchestrated by Osama bin Laden. On this day, four airplanes were hijacked in the Northeast Corridor with the intent to fly them into buildings. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon in Washington The fourth hijacked airplane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after the passengers and crew attempted to retake control of the airplane from the terrorists. It is uncertain what the intended target of Flight 93 was, although some assume it was headed for the White House or the United States Capitol Building.
