Marwan al-Shehhi came from the United Arab Emirates, where his father was an imam. Interviewed in the United Arab Emirates, Royal Highness Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed said of al-Shehhi, "He was a normal individual until he went to Germany. It seems when he went to Germany, he met these radical fanatics who have a very different understanding of Islam than we do." In July 2000, he took flying lessons from Huffman Aviation. By December 2000, he receives a pilot license. By January 2001 he begins to train on a 727 simulator, which has controls similar to a Boeing 767.
