LeRoy Homer, Jr.
From September 11 Memories
LeRoy Wilton Homer, Jr. (1965 - September 11, 2001) was a co-pilot aboard United Airlines Flight 93.
He grew up on Long Island in New York where he always dreamed of flying. In 1987 he graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served as a C-141 pilot on active duty in the United States Air Force from 1988 to 1995 including flying during the Persian Gulf War. In 1999 he achieved the rank of major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
He married Melodie on May 24, 1998 and their first child, Laurel, was born in late 2000.
On September 11, 2001, Homer was the co-pilot of United Airlines Flight 93. He was either killed or critically injured when stabbed by the hijackers. The hijacked plane later crashed after the passengers tried to regain control of the plane. It is unknown why but before the break-in Homer received a text message from the airport from his wife who wanted to make sure he was safe after the first two planes struck the WTC. He never answered the call.
Homer was posthumously awarded an honorary membership in the historic Tuskegee Airmen.
He is survived by his wife, Melodie, daughter, Laurel, along with his mother, seven sisters, brother, and many other family members.
