John Coughlin
From September 11 Memories
Sergeant John Gerard Coughlin, Shield 3751 - New York Police Department ESS-4
Sergeant Coughlin was assigned to the NYPD Emergency Service Unit Truck 4, which has primary patrol responsibility for the North Bronx. Coughlin joined the force on January 5, 1983. He served in the Housing Unit for several years assigned to Patrol Services Area 8, and was transferred to ESU 4 in May 1995. He received a promotion to Sergeant in 1988.
Coughlin was a former Marine, and volunteer firefighter in Pomona, NY, where he lived. He was active in the Toys for Tots program every year at Christmas time, and was on the Member Assistance Program for the NYPD which helps officers in need of crisis assistance.
Thirteen months before his passing, he responded to the home of then-commissioner Bernard B. Kerik, whose infant daughter was choking on some food. Upon the commissioner's arrival, the infant was laughing and playing, safe and sound.
Coughlin died on September 11, 2001. He is survived by his wife Patty, and three daughters, Erin, Tara, and Kayla.
