Douglas Stone
From September 11 Memories
Douglas Stone was an American print shop owner. He died at age 54 in the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001. A native New Englander and resident of Dover, New Hampshire, Stone owned and operated Odyssey Press. He often visited Los Angeles to see a business associate, his ex-wife Beth Stone, and his son, Zach. He graduated from California State Long Beach, returning to New England in the late 1980s after he divorced.
On many visits he watched his son Zach compete in track and cross-country for Fountain Valley High School. On this flight he was coming to see his son begin his freshman year at UCLA.
Zach Stone, son:
- He was a really honest, straightforward person. I used to tell people that he wasn't a fake person. He told you what he thought.
He was one of the finest men I ever knew. I often thought of him and his family. I wish I could have been half the man he was. For so long confused strength with physical strength. Doug, had a strength that surpassed my understanding. I will never forgive myself for not knowing him better and for not being more like him.
As a business colleague, I didn't know him all that well, but the small part of him I knew, I valued. His personality came through on even the most mundane of interactions--quoting prices, dealing with billing--he was a pleasure to work with and after five years, I still miss him. EP
